PX-LB950UE-drive_image_LanOCOn Friday morning I was up early for a private showing at the Bellagio. Normally you wouldn’t think of DVD/Blu-Ray drives of being something that you would really talk about. We very rarely use our drives anymore. Loading Windows or ripping a DVD is about all I use my drive for. The thing is, when I had my netbook and it didn’t have a drive I felt like I was missing out on something. Along with installing Windows, ripping your DVD’s, Blu-Ray and CD’s there is not much else we can do with them.

After getting a quick bite to eat we started the walkthrough. A couple of products caught my eye. The first was the eNAU108. This is a great little drive for those people that don’t have a drive already in their laptops, A.K.A. netbooks or small gaming laptops. The weight of this drive is insane. You wouldn’t think that a DVD drive could weigh this little but it is pretty astonishing.

Walking down the row of products, the next one I had to do a double take with was the eNAU608. This an external DVD drive just like the one above but with Laser Tag, a form of disc labeling tech that takes less time from what I was told and doesn’t need special discs. It also has a removeable top that will let you print out a custom picture if you don’t find one of the included eight pictures to be of your liking.

Over on the Plextor side of products, Blu-Ray had a big presence. The PX-LB950UE: this external Blu-Ray writer will write your Blu-Ray discs at 12x and your DVD’s at 16x. When talking with the rep I noted that the size of the drive was about the size of a Wii. If you are full on your 5.25" drives then this is the drive that you need to take a look at. The finish is also a nice piano black just like all the rest of the gear that you have.

Something new to the Plextor space is SSD’s. Supporting three storage sizes, they pretty much have you covered with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. These drives all support TRIM and use the Marvell 88SS9274 controller. Another nice feature is that all of their drives use SATA6Gb/s interface. This means that these drives can now fully saturate SATA3Gb/s. If you are in the market for an SSD you might want to take a look at Plextor’s SSD line-up.
