This Newegg deal sounds like it is a really good one, but I wasn't exactly sure. I'm not too familiar with all the cards available, if this would be worth it. Also, for anyone familiar with my intents to build a budget rig, would this be a good deal, or would it require me to spend more on higher grade mobo, PSU, or other parts?

It's still hard for me to recommend and Nvidia card right now, other than the 480's if you need a heater. That is a smoking deal though. What is your resolution that your going to be playing? Look around and see what else is out there. If you can't find anything, i'd say go for it.

Already got it, quite literally yesterday. It was a temporary deal so I jumped on it. I'm not too concerned with any particular resolution yet. I'm happy with the looks of it, I just have to test it out on someone's machine to make sure it's not DOA.

Isn't a GT 240 a rebranded 9800GT with a 40mn die instead of a 65nm?

Sounds like the GTS is, according to Wiki. I have no idea, I figured it was a decent buy since no one said otherwise before.

Yeah I still think you made out mad like a fat kid in a candy store with that price considering the 9800GT is still pretty decent especially for budget builds.

Thanks, good to know. I do need to gain some weight.
Anyway, at least I know Newegg is still reliable, and my random splurge was not a mistake. Lol Yes I just called a $60 video card a splurge.

My splurge was the NVIDIA 260 GTX for $215 with shipping lol That's about half your budget :P

Jeez when was this? I guess the 260 GTX is way ahead of the 240GT.
I did look somewhat, and I think the ATI 5770 often recommended was around $150 overall? If so, I guess I really did get a good deal, getting a card (albeit weaker) for around a third of the price.

The 240 isn't a rebranded 9800gt, but would be about the same in performance.

I got 2x9800gt's for <$60 AR in June/09. hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1422574&highlight=galaxy+9800gt

They've been running since in my system. Not very powerful, but I've abandoned spending the big bucks for the fastest depreciating cards these days..

Pretty disappointed with the prices for this series of cards. Nvidia's new cards didn't/don't offer a big enough advantage to make AMD/Vendors drop theirs prices. The cards (5870/5850) are still selling for over MSRP. :(

Was it 2 9800GT's in your rig at LanOC v6.0? If so, I think I'll be SLI'ing the 240GT if I can, your screen and graphics were awesome.

Yes, although according to Tom's benches, the GT240 is about 25% slower than the 9800gt. Not 100% sure on the accuracy www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graph...mpare,1830.html?prod[3624]=on&prod[3625]=on&prod[3696]=on

I play everything at 1920x1200 though, with medium-high settings depending on the game.

Interesting. At least I'm at a good starting point. The box does say it can overclock up to 85%, I have no idea how that works, didn't know video cards could overclock.

Yeah, they can all overclock by a software utility (not up to date on the latest ones), older ones used were atitool and rivatuner. Some vendors ship their own utilities (i know MSI does). Cards can oc until they start artifacting or make the system freeze, at which point they're at a heat or voltage barrier. I don't think there's many (if any) cards that can be voltmodded these days to allow them to OC further by pumping more power into the cards.

But I'd call bs on 85%, you can usually achieve about 10-15%
