Trojan (not the good kinds)

So i'm getting an error on my wife's pc. It's from windows defender stating there is a "trojan Downloader:Win32/renos.jm" & "trojan Downloader:Win32/renos.JI" on the system, but i'm unsure hot to clean it off. I've got Avira but i can't get it to scan anymore because i believe the virus is disabiling it.
What's the best plan of action. I've tried booting in safemode and then running the antivirus but it's not working there either... Hopefully i'm not to the point of no return.
Thanks

Pull the drive and scan it with another computer. This is where the hot swappable, hard drive rack, comes in handy. Thanks VIZO

but if i put it into my PC, won't the virus move into my PC also?

It's either that or format the thing and start over. If you need files off of it use Linux.

lol dave if you pull the hard drive out of the other computer and put the new one in there really is no chance of infection.

unless you execute files on the old drive.

I would recommend trying out one of the online virus checkers before you pull the drive.

The problem is i can't get to the internet on her PC. ever time i google search something, it takes me to some random page, sometimes porn sometimes other randomness.
If there is something i could download and then transfer via usb drive to her pc and run that would be ideal, but it seems that the trojan kills the executable file for the Avira that i've tried to run preventing it from doing it's scan. :-(
Thanks guys for the help, i'm sure i'm not the only one who runs into virus problems every once in a while.
Also if i were to buy a virus protection program, what's the best one on the market for the price?

The risk of infection from putting the infected drive in the working computer is really very low especially if you have active antivirus on that computer, just don't go clicking on things on the infected drive while you run the AV scan (except to select the drive itself from the AV product). If you don't want to do that you could always make a BartPE boot disk with an antivirus program pre-loaded. It's not that hard to do but I would pick transferring the hard drive.

Oh yeah, make damn sure you are booting to the right drive in the BIOS otherwise all bets are off.

Yeah Reaer i was wondering how i could know which SATA drive was booting since they both have windows installed on them. You'd think the PC would use the one it's used to, but i'm sure it's not that easy...
another questions, apparently when in installed Vista, i used x32 on her 64 bit system. She's only running a dual cord AMD with about 2 gigs of RAM, am i better off just formatting her hard drive and reinstalling using 64 bit, or trying to save the 32 bit version that's currently installed? She doesn't have anything on there she minds loosing.
Thanks guys!

Your BIOS should have an option within it to select the boot device. Check it out before you put cable up her HDD so that you know what yours is identified as, write it down if it's not easily remembered. Then make sure after hers is cabled up that things are the same.

32 vs 64 bit... Really there's not a reason to reload/upgrade unless you're itching to. If you plan on upgrading her computer to >= 4GB ram, then there's your reason. Even with 64 bit becoming more popular, 32 bit isn't going to die until OS support goes away. Windows 7 is still available in 32 bit, but the next release will probably phase it out. You can Google for the few other differences between 32 vs 64 bit but really there's not much worth worrying about especially for a non poweruser.

Can i start up windows then after it's booted plug in her Satat Cord? Is it a piece of hardware that can be done like that? Then there would be no worries of booting the wrong windows.

*possibly* Let's put it this way, I've not done it before but technically SATA allows for hot swap so I don't see why not except that WAY back in the day the BIOS had to "recognize" each drive @ boot time. The other thing you can do is cable her HDD outside the case. You should be able to tell either by noise or feel which drive is being booted from. It may ACCESS the other drive during boot but most of the time it will be clicking away on the boot drive.

EDIT: You probably know this but if you are putting the HDD outside the case, run it upside down especially if there is an exposed circuit board on the bottom of the drive, and prop one side up so that the tiny pinhole vent has enough room to breathe. I generally just lay one side up against the side-edge of the case then be careful not to bump anything.

I don't recommend putting the HD outside of the case, and I really don't recommend plugging in the SATA afterwards. You're adding in way to many more variables to a situation that needs to be taken care of methodically really.

Just add in her drive, when you power it on, go into bios setup and check the boot sequence. As long as it says you're drive you're fine. You really don't need to worry about doing this, the risk if you infecting like this is extremely low.

If you're still insanely paranoid about this whole idea, go another, simple route. I'm willing to bet you have a Flash Drive laying around. If you have one with U3 or w/e that flash drive OS-type software is called you can install a resident Anti Virus Program on it, use your working computer to do this, then plug in your flash drive and scan from it.

One way or another you're going to have to clear this infection out externally as the virus has really locked you out. Either flash drive or put it in the other machine and check the bios.

You can hotswap SATA hard drives, I do it all of the time. You will have to right click on my computer and manage. You will have to rescan harddrives to get windows to find the drive though.

Honestly if your not comfortable with all of this and she is fine with a clean install you might be best to just do that.

Like I said before, did you try using one of the online virus scanners? Ive seen them get past viruses blocking out other scanners.
