So, youre loaded right? And you go to apple.com and pick the biggest baddest mac pro you can spec. Its going to look like this:
Two 2.93GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (12 cores)
32GB (8x4GB)
Mac Pro RAID Card
512GB solid-state drive
2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB
One 18x SuperDrive
Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel)
Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel)
Apple Magic Mouse + Magic Trackpad
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English) & User's Guide
AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro - Auto-enroll

Give or take a few hundred for solid state considrations and software..

your bill is going to float in right around a whopping $17k

the pc builder in me wants to have a heart attack..

so, if you had 17k to blow on a full PC software and all... what would it be. ( clearly.. the sky is the limit)

Why go Mac? Any why only one video card? :-) seems a little exsessive to me with 32 gigs of RAM. But i guess if your going MAC to begin with, your doing lots of encoding and need to processing power instead of multiple video cards for a wall of screens!

I think i'd just get a modest PC (around 3K) and then buy a new car to drive my PC around in! Might even get Windows 7 B)

There's a very fine line that starts at about $1200-$1500 total spent (peripherals included) on a system where you have to sink exponentially more money into something for more performance gain. It makes me want to /facepalm anytime I hear someone spending some ludicrous amount of money on any type of purchase that is going to just be barely different than a lower cost alternative. If you're throwing money away - please just throw some my way and I'll make good use of it. If I were given $17k and there were strings attached that I absolutely had to spend it all on computer stuff, I'd be saving it and building 10+ kickass computers over the next 20-30 years. That said I'm very happy with what I have now - i7 920, 9GB RAM, 1.5 TB total storage space, Radeon 5870 does everything I need just great.

I got the point of the post, since he said you were going to the MAC store, i figured he was just pointing out what they had top of the line. and i was just trying to be funny and say "why go MAC?". Obviously my humor is lost when typed out. ;)
I just wonder, if you're loaded, why only spend $17K on a PC?
For the record, i think i'd buy 10 PC's just like what i have at home (maybe upgrade the video cards) and set them up at my house, so people could come over and LAN without having to pack up their PC!

I would build something similar to what JJ posted. The main thing I would change is using a case that fits the SR-2;)

i was curious to see if with 17 k people would go with more horse power ( loaded with hdd vid ram cpu) appearance ( big elaborate cases with overkill cooling etc), or maybe display crazy with a projector (easy to drop 5-10k on a high lumen projector)

I was thinking custom mountain mod, i think they call the sr2 a XL atx board, some of the new cases are designed for the extra big boards.

Ya, Mountain Mods makes several cases that can accommodate the SR-2 board from EVGA. I would be hard pressed to want to spend 17k on just one pc, but if I had to I'd probably mimic what MaximumPC did for the latest issue. It was around 15k and change and had some really nice stuff. I think I could enjoy the 3 30" monitors, triple video cards, 4.4 terabytes of storage, 12 cores, 24 gigs of RAM and Win 7 Ultimate and the complete water cooling setup. I'd like to find room in all that for the speakers they left out, and perhaps a few other essentials too. Heck with 17k I'd build the pc, and buy a damn good seating/desk arrangement to setup with it.

Evertime someone does not use an 800D for their case a baby seal is clubbed!!!!!!

Why spend 17k on a Mac Pro, when you get the same thing with an iPad for $499? lol.

I would build a nice rig, save most of it, get some blow, a crave case from White Castle and 5 hookers. Done deal. That's my build or should I say demise?
