well if you want to do tourney style in COD4 or MW2 the best way to go would be TDM or S&D (my fave). really on either game you can do ANY map. The nice thing with MW2 and COD4 is that you can take off all the perks.. or even just allow certain perks and weapons.. so everyone will be on an even playing field (besides general skill).

Yeah, the pam mod for Cod4 at Stompfest was amazing for that.

Edit: Though they did a free-for-all tournament, which is my specialty.

I played a demo of Serious Sam HD from Steam, and it's interesting, reminds me of Doom and older FPS games like that (makes sense since it's a remake of a 90's FPS), but it's slightly predictable, and they just seem to throw enemies at you constantly by the end. Looked good, but just got annoying after awhile. I will have to give multiplayer a try, but is cooperative the same setup as single player? Or is it different levels?

And I do like CoD4 for TDM, DM, and S&D, good modes to play. A tournament could work for that, with everyone on equal level.

Come on now, there's a points competition, and only 3 new posts here?

I have the original versions of Serious Sam. Deathmatch is pretty fun, but co-op get kinda boring. They throw massive amounts of bad guys at you, so it's fun for a while. The problem is there's no incentive not to die. You just respawn and continue killing everything. You may be thinking, yea, that sounds good. Trust me, only for a little while.

I agree. Its fun for a once through in coop.

Ok, good input. It seemed like Serious Sam would just put more enemies in to balance out the more players. But the demo claims (unless I am misreading) 16 person co-op. So that would be an insane amount of players and enemies, and would either be yawningly easy, or extremely hard. Anyway, it's something to consider, not written off the list yet.

Also, I have been reading some posts over realistic games (and the lack of realism therein, lol), and I wondered if anyone paid much attention to Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising? Lersar and I bought it on Steam, but I have yet to play it. The multiplayer is supposed to be bigger and possibly good.

Additionally, I have played FarCry 2 on PS3 and I LOVED the multiplayer in it. The PC requirements are higher, but I think most people here would be able to play it. The game is pretty low-priced these days. Anyone else tried it?

What did everyone think about the UT2k4 at v6.0?

And we did get a few matches of MW2 in, I didn't have any problems with lag, how did it run for everyone else?

Also, how much interest do we have for StarCraft II? I'm a pretty big fan of the beta ATM.

I think you should try to stay with games that people can LAN and there will be a large amount of gamers:

Good:
TF2
Flatout2
Cod4
Ut04 - Should try some onslaught games next time
Crysis Wars - Although not enough people seemed interested, or maybe there was a tourney going on at the time?

Too much CSS (always too much at every LAN)

Bad:
DOTA?
BFBC2?
CODMW2?

Could Add:
Serious Sam?
L4D - enough players?
Battlefield 1942/DC/2?
Fear?
Trackmania
GRID
Try a diff RTS? RON?

I had a blast playing MW2, I was shocked to see that once in a private match it was basically a LAN game.

But it prob won' be a tournament game just because of only part of the community having it.

I'd love to See BFBC2 have LAN support by LanOC V7.0!

I have a hard time endorsing any "internet" only game for a tourney @ a LAN. Maybe I'm old-school but there are too many variables when play online from the same location...(read into this more LAG!)and admin headaches!

But alas all the good new games seem to be moving to this online only model to curb all the pirates, and make the games easier to port from (to) consoles .... Progress ;)

I agree to an extent, its undeniable that we have a great time with a full server of TF2. But I'm a huge RTS fan, which are typically limited to a smaller amount. I don't want to see them go away.

RON = Rise of Nations? Whats the player cap in it?

I'm also a big fan of L4D, but it has even more restricting player limits than some RTS even at it's max.

I'd be cool with LoL too. Me, Shroud, and Harple have been playin quite a bit of that. Also, we did get a decent amount of ppl playing Crysis Wars. I'd be up for playing that for a tourny or just all-around more of it.

Crisis wars is a good game with LAN support. Plus i think everyone can borrow a copy so there is no excuse not to be in the tourney :-)

Just a thought but for tournies and even big planed games we might want to try to stick to games that people don't have to go out and buy. Of course people are going to buy new games but i feel we could have bigger games if people were able to get it off the server. If anyone thinks of an older-ish game I can try to work my magic and "acquire" a copy of it. but I doubt I will be at th enext LanOC cause I will be working in tennesse over the summer. Also I don't know if anyone out ide of Star, Harple, and I have played it but Command and conquer renegade is a pretty fun fps that is old enough to easily get for free and can lan with only one file of it.

we should consider some of the Free options that are out there. I put a post in the hot deals section, and WIKI has a whole page devoted to free FPS games..

This is exactly why we really, really were hesitant about doing MW2/BC2 tournaments. Most the games played at the LAN, except TF2 which is $20 and discounted all the time, even to $2.49 at one point, are available. Plus I know both Wes and I have at least one extra steam account with a copy on it each. And I think ultimately we try to look tournaments the same way, which is why we felt UT2004 was a good option for FPS.

The thread Techno created on free games is a good list, too. If most are as good as Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, they're definitely something to consider. It'd be good to see that list developed more too if anyone else knows some. W:ET will be available on the LanOC server too, as well as anything else that we test.

Come to think of it a Wolfenstine:ET Tournament would be allot of fun!

It's free, yes it's a bit oldschool but I think it would appeal to both the newer gamers (Come on you guys all play CS!!, and wolf:ET is way newer then that!) and us old guys (being of more nostalgic nature for us).

Updated, more organized and such, removed some that seem unlikely, and admitted that, with the beta out, no one wants to go back to SC1. I am a fan of free games, most older games, and getting in larger groups. I loved Flatout2 but the player limit was kinda tight. I would love UT2k4 Onslaught! Could do a tournament with that, and I've tested out some tweaks for that mode (since I love it) to make it play faster and more intensely, since there can be a lot of walking without killing at times.

I have to admit, I really want to get in some Rock Band. Been listening to songs I have, which I know are available for it, and I'd like that. Maybe in a mini lan.

As for the existing games, it's kinda becoming obvious that people like FPS, and there are a lot of FPS out there.

Also, know that games on the List are what I think are/will be popular. The list is NOT of tournament games (god, that would be a week-long lan), nor are they officially accepted by Wes and the staff. My intent for this is to talk about what we like, discuss, and try to get some ideas what is wanted by several people, and what people have and are willing to bring to play. I'm trying to help out the staff, and prevent an incident such as the infamous Madden tournament of long ago. ;) So, the more that people agree on a game, the better. If something seems to have no support, it will probably be taken off, or lowered to the bottom. The official List will be intended to tell people what will be playing there, so people can say "I have that", "I love that", or "Ooh, is that good?" and we will have some coordination in what is going on, instead of a room full of people playing all different games, and few of them playing with each other. Personally, that's what I dislike most, since you can do that at home playing online with whoever you want. A LAN should be about getting together to play together. Otherwise, it's like a party where everyone is texting their friends that are somewhere else.

I think RON's a 8-player one too. The only RTS I can think of that supports more is Annon1404:Venice which supports 16. But a game of that couldn't be played in a day, I don't think. Haven't played that with any more than 3 people.

L4D is pretty much the same scenario in terms of player limits, multiple servers could support more, but again the question of # of people having the game would be an issue.

At the last lan there were 20+ people playing MW2 I don't see why we couldn't get a little competition going.. I didn't experience any lag... not sure about anyone else though..

no ididnt experience any lag, and my checks on ping times ( habit because my home connection sucks) showed full bars for everyone. OF course we were doing private sessions and not gaming for xp on the public "servers"

i woudl think that if we could get a full 16 in a group we could connect to the normal servers and still get the map to ourselves.. and get xp.

Age of Mythology I think can reach 16 ppl, maybe WarCraft 3 too. Those are shorter games (as short as the average RTS), and AoM is one of the few RTS I like (my favorite of the Ages games). We have tried AoM before, but it crashed when we had everyone going.

it was running over the network for sure. We were playing our game and part of the way through the internet slowed down and noone had any lag in game.
