freetf2Valve's Robin Walker had an interview with Develop Online today where he announced that Team Fortress 2 is now and will always be FREE. Being one of the biggest PC games in the past 10 years this is a big deal. It will be interesting to see how going free to play will affect future game play, but one thing is for sure. With free games popping up left and right, Steam is going to put up one hell of a fight to competition like EA's Origin.

Update, here is the video from valve

You might call him obsessed or just a hardcore geek. Wes's obsession with gaming hardware and gadgets isn't anything new, he could be found taking things apart even as a child. When not poking around in PC's he can be found playing League of Legends, Awesomenauts, or Civilization 5 or watching a wide variety of TV shows and Movies. A car guy at heart, the same things that draw him into tweaking cars apply when building good looking fast computers. Do you guys think this will improve TF2 or will all of the new users ruin it? What about the possibility of people getting banned and just starting new accounts?

Or that a person can now make as many Steam accounts as he wants and idle in servers for items

I personally think the game is already ruined with all the "upgrades" they have been doing it. It just doesn't play like it did when it first came along and it isn't even close to what the original was like.

I'm not sure... I think things will be ok once the rush of new players pass. I also think we gamers will have to do what we do best. Bitch about it, then adapt.

I agree this point, but you could already change your name and there are tons of servers out there, so i'm not sure it's going to be as big of a deal. It's an "old" game, so if you aren't already playing, it, i doubt you're going to pick it up.
I also agree with all the upgrades ruining the game, there are just too many weapons, boxes, and other junk. But at least they kept pumping out the updates, maps, and improvements even when it wasn't free...

So just play on a server that only allows the original items. It's not like you don't have a choice. I think the amount of updates and support they've given this game is unprecedented.

I like the amount of weapons, and I'll admit it, the collector in me even likes some of the cosmetic things. I just liked it more when you couldn't buy anything, or when some items could only be purchased. Having 'tier 2' weapons was a sign of expertise in a way.

I think it's kind of annoying when they give pre-order bonuses, then they become crafts and drops a week later. Items are more of just preference than a sign of achievement and ability. I think going F2P is an odd choice. I guess that's the new hip thing. I'd rather they just continue to charge for the game, and keep people from tricking accounts and other issues mentioned. It was only 8 bucks I think.
I expect a drop in updates, since it's kind of a statement of completion now. All the update goals seem complete, and I expect them to move on to new projects. Like CS2. For the community, I think it will lead to more chaos, but I've always felt the game was never too unbalanced such that someone just owned my team. I could see the game turning more MMO with higher player numbers, but overall I think we'll have more people for a short people. And no excuse not to play at lans.

Edit: By the way, just noticed the game has TF2 Premium Content as DLC in its Properties. It says these came from Retail. Maybe that's a feature they added, that free accounts have some missing elements? Or maybe buyers will get extras in the future.
