Lol. You've been posting a lot, more than usual it seems. Plus, you know all the tricks to getting them points. Do the chips make a difference? And admin status may impact it too. Lol you could probably have the server bow down and gift you 1000 points for every character you type in the forums. Tape down a letter, post it a day later, and crash the server.

I suspect some offers to donate for points to win this thing. I considered it, but I want to be legitimate.

I will admit, I have seen more consistent, and later logins today, likely from the contest. Normally I'm alone at these hours, and I just drill through reading everything and posting, then head off. Finally cleared out most of the new posts, and got myself up to the top 5 of the month. Don't know that I will stay there by tomorrow, but maybe.

heres the thing.
there were no set rules .. what is spam and what is serious.
I have posted what i feel are several solid posts and several that are squishy..

But. I didnt post anything merely for the sake of posting.

I guess what im really saying is that without some solid rules for such a competition.. dont complain.. I havent seen anyone yet posting absolutely idiotic posts that have absolutely nothing to do with anything. Yes, there were some video posts. but isnt that what the off topic section is for?

IMHO as long as posts are somewhat techy/geeky then their fair game..

Ultimately its up to Garfield and Lersar to adjust the points to reflect properly..

Pretty much. It's not like somebody is going to each thread and posting "lol" after everything.

well I've decided to pull myself out of this contest... I'm already annoyed by some of the people on these forums complaining about the content/ quality of some of the posts I've been making. If you look at any forums that I'm a part of I am VERY active. I like to post things I find that I enjoy that maybe someone else could enjoy... besides three posts... all have been about gaming. whether it was a funny video I found or a question. I will continue to post on the forums but I want nothing to do with this contest nor any upcoming ones... its more annoying than fun. And if you don't like my posts because they aren't focused on LAN things (to be honest I know nothing about computers or really any technology, just thought I could bring a little fun to the forums) then DON'T READ MY POSTS. The forums are set up real nice you know... tells you who posts what.. and I'm pretty detailed in my titles and I place them in the right topic box. You know I'm sure if this contest wasn't going on.. no one would really care what I posted, and it wouldn't be a problem.

EDIT

and to add to my rant... I've been vocal on these forums since I started before the LAN party... notice my intro had 58 replies mostly from me talking back... I have be in the top five since I started... seems to me like I'm the only one acting "normal" most of you hardly posted before I came around anyways.

Dont take it to heart Tiff. This kind of crap happens everywhere. Like i was trying to say earlier just because you find it interesting doesnt mean i will or someone else will. Thats just the difference between people. Im also annoyed with the complaining about quantity/quality..

Besides.. youll still win even if you only reply to posts.

Everyone is going to have their on standard on SPam Posts. As long as you think you are adding to the community through you posts, then don't people others bring you down.
I agree off topic is for randoms stuff, but it did kinda seem like it was post any random site with something interesting on it even if you happened to find 5 a day... To me it's just too much for the community to keep up with. When there are 25-50 unread posts it's hard to keep up with everyone and feel connected. I just would hate for the site to turn into a Stompfest where there are soo many random things going on, it's hard to keep the serious and the stupid strait.
I'm not into big faceless organizations, not that i think LAN OC is even close to being there, just making sure we don't slip on account of a silly contest...

Absolutely. The contest is in place to help get more activity on the forums, which everyone has been doing an awesome job of. It's great to leave for a few hours and know when I get back there will be plenty to catch up on.

As for spam, unless you're advertising viagra or something (already have my supplier, thanks though), it's more than welcome. Personally, I haven't seen anything that wasn't a good post since the LAN, nor have I really seen anyone call anything out.

If you feel as though you don't want to participate in the contest, you're not obligated or anything. But please don't let that stop you from being active on our forums. We've picked up several great members since v6.0, and we enjoy hearing from everyone. As Twodavez said, we don't want to lose anyone over a contest.

My only concern is that the typical site discussion (which it looks like it's semi-normal today) doesn't degenerate into the equivalent of bulk-email for forums. I prefer deliberate discussions with people (gaming trash talk included :P). If I'm in the minority, no big deal I'll just adjust my RSS reader filters to ignore the Off Topic section.

By the way, I don't think karma has anything to do with the contest but perhaps the admins can correct me if wrong.

Sounds like things kinda got heated over the issue of spam and such. Tiff, the stuff you posted seemed legitimate, I personally didn't (and couldn't) watch the videos, but it seemed ok. I think the main issue was that Off Topic could become just a 'retweet' forum of sorts, just reposting whatever was going on elsewhere that had some humor. It's ok in moderation, which is what it appears to be so far. Since starting threads is one of the biggest point groupings, it's something to be aware of and control, since if everyone posted new threads with links to videos that we liked, Off Topic would get more than a little jammed up. I think it was more of a question of intent, if new threads were being started for legitimate reasons, or if they were just for the sake of the contest. I hadn't noticed that number of video posts in such frequency in the recent past, so it was slightly suspect. If they were intended for the benefit of all, then that is legitimate.

If it was anything I said, I apologize. I don't remember what all I said last night (I have some bipolar issues, especially when I get tired), but I don't believe anyone was attacking you for your posts. I do remember saying something about thinking things would be more centered on the LAN, and I didn't mean it as discussing networking and hardware, just more of the issue of what people want to see and do for the next lans, along with any other lans coming up. I would like to see more of that discussion, especially since I am trying to lead a topic on the discussion of games for 7.0. I seem to have bad luck with keeping people interested in my topics, so yea, I was hoping that more people would talk in there for the contest at least. To be honest, if anyone complains about not having any say in game choices for 7.0, I'd be tempted to slap them myself, because I worked to start the discussion as soon as I could after the Lan. The topic is there, and if people do not support it, then whatever. I'm surprised the staff don't get more pissed off about it, since they have these issues for EVERY aspect of the Lans. Sorry, but yeah. Not attacking you Tiff, I know you are heading out so you can't recommend much. But we could talk about 6.5, more about time, people interested, and location based on that. I figure it will be during the week, since most x.5 events are.

Hi everyone!

I go to work one day and it seems to have gotten a little crazy around here. Just to clear a couple things up

Karma does not, and will never give or take away any points.

Spam to me is two things... Short worthless posts, and viagra type posts. Nether of these issues have really come up. Because of that I have no current plans on changing anything.

With that said, I would love to explain why I posted the contest. LanOC has good content, a few kick butt LAN parties, even a few good posts on the forums. But for a while it has lacked a feeling of community. This is because people only feel they should post about Lan or tech issues. It would be great to find out more about each other and have conversations about our interests/life/ect. This is what makes websites like stompfest and PDX stand out. The LAN events are more like family reunions. Everyone here is my friend, some I would even consider like family. Because of that I would love to know whats going on in life.

For example: TwoDaves had a kid recently. I know that because he posted it up on his facebook. I would love to see posts like that around here.

The videos, jokes, sales, ect all have a place. As long as you are posting them in the correct forums it shouldn't be an issue. Hell for those who don't want to read that stuff, all you have to do is minimize the entire off topic category. Other than that, vote with your reply's. If its an interesting post make sure you reply even if it is just to thank them for posting it. A lack of reply's will keep the bad topics from coming back.

And Tiff, you can't get upset and stop posting. I love having you guys around. You really have been a great addition to the community

Good information, thanks for the clarifications. I do feel like we have a good community, but learning about each other would be cool. Maybe we need to get more into the self-introduction posts. I just never really thought about that aspect. And I like the idea of 'voting with your replies'.

I guess i've always kept LAN OC Around for the tech questions and the nerdy side of my life, while i've reserved Facebook for how i communicate the other side of my life that i try to make as normal as possible for long lost friends and family... Guess i never thought to merge to two on LAN OC. Plus since most of the people i game with at all the local LANs are already my friend on facebook, i didn't see the need to double post the info.
I'll work on keeping everything updated as i do look forward to seeing everyone at the lans and it is a family reunion.

Exactly what I thought. It makes sense to have some cross-over, since not everyone (especially new-comers) are joined up with us on facebook. Like you said, it's something we'll have to work on doing. But I'll give it a shot.
